Day 10 (July 12th)

Elko, BC to Coleman, AB

We passed through some of the most beautiful country of the trip so far as we were surrounded by lush, misty mountains all morning. A local informant had let us know that we would go through a tunnel today, and we were excited by the prospect.

Our first tunnel of the trip, though short, did not disappoint. It was cut into the raw rock and without any reinforcement. The scenery before the tunnel was only surpassed by that after it.

A few more turns of the wheels and we we're rolling through Fernie (a pleasant alpine resort community) and Sparwood (a pleasant coal mining community). At Sparwood, roadwork forced us off the shoulder and into a lane of the road. Though entitled to a full lane, we stuck to the right edge... This, however, was not enough for one car driver who honked at us angrily. As he passed and gestured, Tyler managed to fiercely smile and wave at him, causing a reaction the two of us found quite satisfying.

The climb through the Crowsnesti Pass was fairly smooth with not too much climbing, as we were at a simillar grade to the rail line through most of it. It was also very pretty to boot!

And then... there it was... "Welcome to Alberta!" it said, in big friendly letters.
